Overcome WhatsApp Restrictions with DNS, Here's How to Use it

After the limited access to social media (social media) and WhatsApp in Indonesia since Wednesday 22 May 2019, then, WhatsApp and social media like Instagram experienced a slowdown when downloading or uploading videos and photos.

So that makes it difficult for daily use, including by ordinary users who do not have bad intentions.

Some users try to overcome WhatsApp restrictions by using a free Virtual Private Network (VPN). This is risky because the traffic to disguise the user's location will be redirected to the VPN owner's server so that data is vulnerable to being peeped.

Another way that can be used is to use a public DNS resolver provider. DNS aka Doman Name System is an internet "telephone book" that is tasked with translating URL addresses into IP addresses.

The goal is that the user's device can connect to the destination site server. For example, the web address www.google.com translates to IP address 172.217.6.238.

Internet service providers usually have their own DNS that can "censor" certain site addresses, such as those ordered to be blocked in a country. But, internet users can also use other DNS outside that is provided by default.

Besides being able to access blocked sites or services, the use of alternative DNS can also overcome the restrictions on WhatsApp and Medsos functions that currently occur in Indonesia.

How to use public DNS on Android
Android users can choose to use public DNS directly from the device, no need for additional applications.

The condition, the gadget in question must run Android 9.0 Pie because in the latest version that Google has implemented the "Private DNS" feature to choose DNS itself.

Steps, open the Settings> Network & Internet menu> Advanced> Private DNS. Or search for the keyword "Private DNS" through the search column in the Settings menu.

Then, in the Private DNS window, change the "off" option to "private DNS provider hostname" and select the DNS you want to use by entering the name "hostname".

Quoted from the Digicular page, Saturday (05/25/2019), here is an example of a public DNS provider that can be used:

1. Google DNS – 8.8.8.8 (hostname: dns.google)

2. Cloudflare DNS – 1.1.1.1 (hostname: 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudfrare-dns.com)

3. Quad9 DNS – 9.9.9.9 (hostname: dns.quad9.net)

Are you still using an Android 8 Oreo or older device? Relax, there is another way that can be done by installing the Cloudflare DNS application from the Play Store application store.

This method is easier to do, just download it from the Play Store and install the application. Android 9 Pie device and above can also use it.

This simple application will directly connect Cloudflare's device to DNS 1.1.1.1 once activated. There is also an iOS version on the App Store app store for iPhone users. Good luck!
